ProxyTool proxy setup

ProxyTool is a proxy client in the mould of Proxifier: it sends the apps you name through a proxy, including apps with no proxy setting of their own. Add the proxy once under Proxies, test it with Check, then write a rule per app on the Rules page. Location rides in the username, so one set of credentials covers every country, and a sessid gives an app its own IP.

ProxyTool proxy fields

  1. Open the Proxies page and click Add Proxy. Paste a proxy line into Proxy Name to fill every field at once, or enter the fields below by hand.
  2. Turn on Requires Authentication, enter the Username and Password, and click Check. Save once all five steps pass.
  3. Open the Rules page and click Add Rule. Name the app in Application / Process (for example chrome.exe), set Target Ports to 80,443 and Protocol to TCP, choose Action Proxy and pick the proxy.
  4. Open Traffic Monitor › Connections and confirm the app's rows name your rule and your proxy.

Tips & gotchas

  • Set the rule's Target Ports to 80,443. The gateway forwards only to ports 80, 443, 8080, 8443, 8888, 8090, 53, 853, 5060 and 5228, so a rule on * sends an app's other connections into the proxy to fail instead of letting them go direct.
  • Set the rule's Protocol to TCP. ProxyTool can relay UDP over SOCKS5, but the gateway's SOCKS5 carries TCP only, so a UDP rule pointed at it drops that traffic.
  • SOCKS5 on port 824 is the better default: hostnames resolve at the exit. With HTTP on port 823, keep the Method selector on Basic. Turn on Resolve hostnames through proxy on the DNS page so the app's lookups don't leave from your own connection.
  • Rules are checked top to bottom and the first match wins, so put an app's rule above any broad one. A new proxy stays inactive until an active rule points at it.
  • To give two apps different IPs, add the proxy twice with a different sessid in each username (sessid.app01, sessid.app02) and point one rule at each. City, state, ZIP and ASN targeting meter at 2× on every pool except premium residential.
  • Coming from Proxifier: Settings › Profiles › Migrate from Proxifier imports a .ppx or .xml profile with its proxies, chains and rules. Check the imported proxy against the fields above before you activate it.

How do I add a proxy to ProxyTool?

Open the Proxies page and click Add Proxy. Enter gw.proxmint.com as Host Address, 824 as Port and SOCKS5 as Proxy Type (or 823 and HTTP), turn on Requires Authentication, enter your login and password, and click Check. Save once it passes, then point a rule at it on the Rules page.

Can I paste a proxy line into ProxyTool?

Yes. Paste a line such as socks5://PROXY_USER:PROXY_PASS@gw.proxmint.com:824 into the Proxy Name field of the Add Proxy dialog and ProxyTool fills in the host, port, type, username and password. The Proxy generator on your product's dashboard page builds these lines, targeting included, in SOCKS5 or HTTP.

Why does an app lose its connection after I route it through the proxy?

Usually because the rule sends every port into the proxy. The gateway forwards only to ports 80, 443, 8080, 8443, 8888, 8090, 53, 853, 5060 and 5228, so set the rule's Target Ports to 80,443 and let the app's other traffic go direct. A rule set to UDP fails too: route TCP only.

How do I route only one app through a proxy?

Write a rule for it: on the Rules page click Add Rule, put its executable in Application / Process (several are separated with ;), set Action to Proxy and pick the proxy. Apps that match no rule keep their direct connection.

Is ProxyTool free?
